POWDERHORN CREEK RANCH MARES

Standing sons of Smart Little Lena, Khemosabi and Port Bask the Powderhorn Creek Ranch in located in Powderhorn, CO

Let me tell you about my “girls.” Each and every one is so special to us for their personality, their abilities and the beautiful foals they produce.    All of my mares are ridden and used on trail rides, some have been shown, and all are out of National Champion Sires!    They also qualify for my slogan “pretty is as pretty does.”    They are all very typey for their breed – both Arabians and Quarter Horses. (A pretty head is a must for even my Quarter horses). They all have performance pedigrees behind them with some of the leading Performance Sires including Dry Doc, Desperado V, Barbary, Khemosabi, Safire, Doc Bar, Doc’s Hickory, Peppy San, Fadjur, Serafix to name a few. Can you say that “I love the old bloodlines?” “YES I do!” When is the last time you heard of any of our National Champion Halter horses ALSO winning a National Championship in performance at the SAME National show? It’s been a long time.

I believe these mares are carrying the bloodlines of horses that could do both – halter and performance. They also carry the bloodlines that have disposition and heart.    Like I mentioned earlier, I entrust my horses to my three small children. I have often found my daughter in the middle of the pasture “Feeding her girls” with a bucket of treats. Now, that’s trust.   My Safire (by Bask) daughter was bred to be a “hot” English type horse.   I trained her to drive and ride and be “all that she could be.”   Today, she is one of the most trusting and loving mares I own. When I first purchased her, with desires for an “English” horse, I had no idea that 10 years later I would have a daughter that is totally in-love with this mare. My Five year Old Daughter can ride this mare – anywhere she wants to go, with or without a foal at her side. This to me is priceless and no blue ribbon from the show-ring could compare. You see, at one point, I had a professional trainer tell me “You have her too calm . . . . . she needs more fire.”    Well, as it was to be intended, she is perfect -- exactly the way she is, and the fact that she is calm and trusting is to all our benefit and she throws this remarkable quality in her foals.    I don’t like the sight of show horses that grip the side of the stall when they see a “human” walk-in. The Arabians were bred in the desert to be companion horses – sometimes sharing tents with their owners. That is the type of Arabian I love and cherish.

Come see my “girls”. They are all happy. They have a 200- acre green grass pasture in which most of them foal out in and spend all summer – raising their foals as God intended.    In return, these foals have GREAT minds. They know how to “handle” creeks, water and rivers. They have seen herds of Elk and deer pass through their pasture and they know how to run up and down the mountainside like wild horses. But, they have also been handled since day one. They have had brief experiences in “stalls”, they have been in trailers, tied, shots and regular farrier appointments – but for most of their first year – they are allowed to be “Horses.”    I believe they grow up to be good minded, healthy horses that can be used in a variety of disciplines!    I welcome you to our ranch.

P.S. Can you tell I love my MY GIRLS as much as I LOVE my BOYS??
